Coconut Oil: Your Saviour In The Colder Months

I don’t know about you, but my skin gets really dry during autumn/winter.  I’ve always had trouble with this, and also always had trouble finding a really good moisturiser to treat it.  Sure, often you really want to treat yourself with an amazing smelling body butter, but sometimes you just really need something that will work properly and get the job done.  That’s where coconut oil comes in: this is an organic moisturister which has been raved about in the beauty community for a few years now, and I’ve just recently hopped on the bandwagon and wanted to share it with you – everything from my thoughts on it and 30 uses for it! Yep, thirty!  And, there are loads more but these are just some of my favourites.

I use the Coco Loco organic coconut oil which I believe is from Lidl (my grandma bought it for me) and it is really good and very inexpensive, which is always a plus!  I find that you really do not need much to moisturise your whole body, and while I really dislike the smell of coconut, this one isn’t strong at all so I can totally stand the scent!  It never fails to make my skin super soft and it also doesn’t feel really greasy.

Anyway, the most interesting thing about coconut oil is that it is really versatile; it can basically be used for ANYTHING!  I know lots of people use  it as a cooking oil, and the most obvious use for it here might be moisturising, but I’m going to share with you a whopping thirty ways that you can use coconut oil in your life.  And, by the way, you should totally be doing these because they’re pretty cool and not to mention very helpful!

  1. Use it on your eyelashes – before you go to sleep at night, apply coconut oil onto your eyelashes and they should grow thicker and longer if you do it every night!
  2. Massage into your cuticles – if you put coconut oil onto your cuitcles they’ll grow healthier, stronger and softer: no more painful peeling cuticles here!
  3. All over body moisturiser – a little obvious, but though’t I’d include it anyway! Rub coconut oil all over your body to make your skin stupidly soft!
  4. Body scrub – adding equal parts coconut oil and sugar together, along with some essential oils if you’d like, can make an amazing exfoliator that will remove your dead skin and make it really soft.
  5. Put it into your bath – a spoonful or two of coconut oil melted into your bath will make your bathwater feel luxuriously silky and keep your skin nice and moisturised.
  6. Hide split ends – before you get to go for a trim at the hairdressers, if your split ends are really getting on your nerves, run a little coconut oil over them and it should mask their apperance making your hair look healthier!
  7. Hair mask – overnight or for 20 minutes, coconut oil hair masks are garunteed to make your hair feel super soft and look shiny and glossy.  Simply apply to your hair evenly and wait as long as you’d like, then wash it out thoroughly and you’ll be left with shining locks!
  8. Soothe a sore throat – adding a spoonful of coconut oil to your tea when you have a sore throat will help to soothe your throat and stop it from being so painful.
  9. Take some daily – in whatever form you choose to eat coconut oil, if done so daily it has been proven to help improve sleep, concentration, and even help with weight loss.
  10. Whip it up with shea butter – if you whip the two together, you’ll get a luxurious feeling body butter: you could also add some scented essential oils for an even nicer treat!
  11. Lip balm – I don’t know about you, but my lips get really dry come autumn/winter. Maybe it’s the cold weather, but maybe it’s all those dark matte drying lipsticks I’m wearing! To combat this, I put coconut oil on as a lipbalm all the time, especially when I’m about to go to bed; then I wake up with beautifully soft lips!
  12. Shaving cream – we all know the feeling of having softly shaven legs is the best in the world, but what if you could have super soft legs by using coconut oil as a shaving cream.  Thats right, it’s totally doable and makes the newly shaven leg feeling about a million times better!
  13. Mix it with sea salt – this can help remove the dry skin on your feet, because sea salt is coarser than sugar and so it can tackle tougher skin!  You can also lather coconut oil on your feet, then sleep with socks on to have super soft feet in the morning!
  14. Use it on eczema outbreaks – I suffer from eczema quite badly in the colder weather, my skin gets dry and itchy, especially around my elbows and behind my knees.  You can use coconut oil as a natural remedy to eczema to lessen the effects and keep the area moisturised.  Plus it has antibacterial properties and can help heal wounds quicker.
  15. Use it on your elbows – a little coconut oil on your elbows can help stop them from getting dry, flaky and cracking!
  16. Tame flyaways – if you’re tying your hair back and you’ve noticed a few bits of hair flying away, you can smooth these down with a touch of coconut oil.
  17. Oil pulling – this is something really weird that I found out about the other day, but I might even try it sometime.  Basically you’re supposed to swill your mouth out with coconut oil for 10-15 minutes every day at least five times a week.  This is supposed to improve gum health, act as a mouthwash and help whiten teeth when done consistently, and it’s totally natural.
  18. Lessen your cellulite – if you’ve noticed cellulite on your skin, you can use coconut oil on it to try and lessen it’s apperance (thats only if it bothers you, because you totally do not have to try ‘get rid’ of cellulite if you don’t want to!)
  19. Resolve acne – for some people, when coconut oil has been used as a regular part of their skincare it has been known to help with acne!
  20. Under eye cream – I told you coconut oil can really do anything!  Using it under your eyes at night can help to lessen the apperance of dark circles which makes for an all round brighter complexion!

I hope you enjoyed this post – have I converted you to coconut oil or do you already use it?  Make sure to leave me a comment and tell me which tip surprised you the most! I love my coconut oil!

My Skincare Favourites: Sensitive And Dry Skin

My favourite skincare products with some horrible pictures – better ones are to follow!

I’ve never done a post specifically targeted to drier, more sensitive skin, which seems odd to me considering that is my skin type.  Typically, I have dry skin which is pretty sensitive, although (luckily for me!) I don’t break out often.  While some may experience breakouts when it comes to using the wrong products for their skin type, I tend to just experience dryness or redness, or a stinging sensation, especially around my eyes.  Anyway, over recent months I’ve managed to compile a selection of skincare which is PERFECT for any of you dry/sensitive skin sufferers around here!  Hopefully this will help you if you’re looking for some products to add moisture to your skin, or a new favourite product even if you don’t have the need for sensitive skin tailored products  – seriously, who doesn’t want some super moisturising, gentle skincare once in a while!

So, starting with my more moisturiser related products, I have the Superdrug Vitamin E Hydrating Face Mask.  I had reviewed this a while ago, but I just want to reinforce the point; this is so amazing for stopping dry skin right in it’s track.  I totally love to use this, and when it’s soaked in I’ll wash it off with the scrub I’m going to talk about in a bit and it makes your skin so soft and it is so gentle!  It’s a win win situation.  Sadly for me, I get dry skin pretty much all over my body, especially my legs and this Nivea Creme is something that I feel has been around for ages – I have some memories of it from when I was younger, which is just weird!  I guess it shows that it sticks around, probably because it works.  I lather this on quite thick whenever I have dry patches of skin and leave it on overnight: by morning, my skin is smooth and soft!  My final dry skin saviour here is the Nuxe Paris Multi Purpose Dry Oil, and I love it.  When my face is really dry, I tend to use this under my moisturiser and it’s guaranteed to fix my issues!

The next thing I’m going to talk about is right in the back (sorry you can’t see because these pictures are so horrible!  I took them last night, bad lighting etc, I’m going to take some better quality ones very soon and update the post!) and it’s the Garnier Soothing Vitamin E Enriched Toner.  This is such a gentle yet effective toner, and it really helps even out my skin after washing.  Toners are really important after you’ve cleansed your skin to rebalance your pH levels, and so I always make sure to use one – this Garnier one is really refreshing and I look forward to using it every day!

Finally, from what I think is one of THE BEST high street skincare brands out there, the Neutrogena Spot Stress Control daily scrub.  I love this so much, it’s a gentle scrub which really helps to keep my skin soft and it claims to keep spots at bay – I use this daily, so perhaps this is the saviour to not having too many spots at the moment.  It smells very refreshing, like cucumber, and so is very calming on the skin.

I hope this post maybe helped some of you find some new skincare favourites!  Have you got any skincare holy grails?  Make sure to tell me in the comments!

Garnier Micellar Water Review

Hi guys,

12th December!

Sorry I didn’t blog over the weekend; I was at a sleepover where I got around half an hour of sleep at about 7am, and then was tired all of Sunday so I slept on the sofa and had a mental breakdown about my biology which I think *touch wood* went okay, and my English which was a creative writing mock GCSE assessment and considering I wrote about talking gorillas that didn’t go as well as I’d hoped.  Anyway, I’m not here to rant today, I am here to continue blogmas as I should do!

Whilst today’s post isn’t very Christmassy, I still wanted to do it for you.  I recently bought the Garnier Micellar Water and I thought I’d do a little review because I really rather like this product and I guess that I’ll add to all the reviews online raving about it for you!

img_3568

Okay, so firstly packaging.  I got the pink one, which is the on the go size, even though I’m sure they do the big one in pink, but I swear there are other colours.  Anyway, aside from the different colours thing, I really like the packaging.  It’s really pretty and its also very sturdy.  I had it crammed into a washbag this weekend and to my surprise it didn’t burst or leak!

The formula is really nice.  It’s very powerful but also soothing and cooling, so I think it would be totally fine for sensitive skin.  I have quite dry skin in the winter time and I found it to be really quite moisturising and not drying like some all in one/all over makeup removers can be.  It really cleans your face, which makes it great for travel and for those of us who despise skincare routines and want things over and done with very quickly.  It removed all my face makeup with barely a few swipes, and my eye makeup came off so easily with this, no rubbing or horrible oily solution in your eyes which prevents you from seeing properly.  I had lots of mascara on too which came off with ease, and to that I was so very happy.

I only got the 125ml bottle, which wont last me ages but will last me a long enough time, and next time I will be buying the large bottle – this makeup remover is wonderful. Anyone looking for a refreshing, quick makeup remover should totally go for it.  If you’re doubtful, get the smaller size like I did.

Have you tried the Garnier Micellar Water?  If you have, leave your thoughts in the comments – I’d love to know what other people think!

Five Tips To Keep Your Skin In Great Condition This Summer

Hey guys!

Firstly, let me do a short apology.  I haven’t blogged the past two days and I’m sorry, I wasn’t busy (in fact I barely left my bed), I just had no inspiration what so ever.  Today I had a good hunt through the internet for some good blog post ideas, consulted my notebooks and came up with this!  Anyway, enough of me rambling.

If you’re anything like me, your skin tends to change with the season.  Winter brings dry skin, and summer brings hot sticky weather and oily-ness and ugh, breakouts.  Or at least it does for me, because two miniature mountains have chosen  to erupt on my face (just in time for my birthday tomorrow! Thanks guys :\).  Anyway, I thought I’d conjure up my best tips to keep spots at bay, keep your skin feeling moisturised and healthy and in tip top condition for this summer!!

☆ – Develop a good skincare routine. Having a skincare routine all times of the year is really important.  However, in summer you should change it up a little bit to match the weather and the condition your skin is in.  You can see the skincare routine I use for summer here.  I feel like a lot of people think skincare routines have to be really expensive to be good and actually do something for your skin, but that is totally not true.  Whilst expensive products can be amazing, there are just as good, more affordable products on the highstreet!  My skincare routine consists of mostly Simple, Neutrogena and Nivea.  They are all affordable brands that do a wide range of products tailored to many skin types.  It’s really important to research into this, so watch youtube videos and read blog posts, get to know your skin type then find some products to combat any issues and you should see differences in your skin pretty quickly.

☆ – Stay Hydrated.  We’re all probably the biggest culprit of not drinking enough water when it comes to summer time (or any time really water is so boring).  Our bodies are made up mostly of water (oh god please do not try science on us)and so they relish having more water put into them?  I don’t know, but it works and apparently, through some witchcraft it purifies your skin and removes toxins.  You just need to drink more water, it’s so good for you.  It helps you feel more awake, removes toxins and makes your spots better!

☆ – Oil Blotting Sheets.  Now, luckily for me I don’t get oily very much in summer, more just warm and I can fix it with another dusting of powder.  However, if you get really oily or even just a little oily, carrying around oil blotting sheets is a really good idea to remove oils from your face.  If you don’t feel like that’s enough then you can bring some powder with you to mattify your face.  Just patting your face with some oil blotting sheets will instantly refresh your makeup look and make you look complete again!  This won’t stop you from getting spots or anything, but it will make your skin look better throughout the day.

☆ Wear Suncream/Sunscreen/Sun tan lotion.  Whatever you call it, you need to wear it.  Your skin is fragile and will burn easily.  Even if you don’t burn, chances are the sun is doing damage to your skin and in the long rung, this won’t do you any good what so ever.  You should tailor the SPF to the heat and probably the country you are in (English beaches aren’t going to be as hot as a beach in Spain or France!), but whether you’re wearing SPF10 under your makeup or SPF50, you should wear it.

☆ Sleep.  The one tip everyone knows they should follow, but don’t.  Why sleep on a night when we can sleep for ages on a morning?  Watching Netflix & Youtube, browsing blogs late at night – it’s addictive.  But it is no good for your skin.  You can combat dark patches, improve the quality of your skin and stop spots from being such a problem if you sleep for a good 7-8 hours and have a set time to go to bed!

I hope you enjoyed those tips, and will put them to good use!  I’ve definitely been trying to drink more water and I can say it does help (any of you keen water drinkers can probably vouch for this)!

By the way, tomorrow is my Birthday which is so exciting!  I’m turning fourteen (finally!) and I’m getting a really exciting present which will be so good because mine drives me mad at the moment!  Anyway, I’m not spoiling anything because I’m going into Bath shopping and will be picking up probably a lot of things I don’t need but who wants a Birthday Haul! (I don’t care if you don’t I’m doing one anyway…:) )  So I won’t blog tomorrow but I’ll be back to it the very next day!

Love Soph xx
