Study With Soph – Q&A | Notes, Revision, Subjects and More

Hello everyone!

Today I’ve decided to do a study/school themed Q&A as I’ve asked for questions on twitter and instagram and lots of you had some for me, so what better way to answer them than in a post. There isn’t too much to say about this one, I wont be including the usernames of people who’ve asked me questions so we might as well just dive in!

Do you know what you want to do when you leave school?

Honestly, I have no clue! I know that after year 11 I want to go to sixth form (I’m hoping to do A Levels in English lit, psychology, history and possibly politics depending on where I go) but after that I really don’t know.  I personally don’t think that uni is for me, I just can’t see myself wanting to stay in education for that long, so I think I’d like to do something in journalism.

Which subjects do you take at school and do you like them?

I’m currently doing my GCSEs in Year 11.  I take:

  • English literature and language
  • Maths and statistics
  • Biology, chemistry and physics
  • History
  • Geography
  • French
  • Food Technology

I love both English subjects; it’s my favourite subject and about the only thing I can do.  Maths, chemistry and physics are the bane of my existence and I cannot do them to save my life, although statistics isn’t too bad.  I quite enjoy biology and geography, and I really like history but there is a lot of content.  Food tech isn’t a GCSE, its a VCert and while I like it, find it quite easy and am happy to have done the written exam in the subject (I got a distinction), it’s a lot of coursework which takes up more time than I’d like.  French is so horrible and I’m pretty bad at it as well!

What is your favourite subject to revise and why?

I really enjoy revising history because even though there is loads of content, it’s quite easy to understand and my notes are always really detailed and look pretty; it’s the subject I revise the most even though I probably don’t need to revise it as much as I do.

What is your system for taking notes?

Mostly,  I just write everything under a huge heading with some smaller sub-headings to separate information, but sometimes I’ll use mindmaps or the cornell note taking method in sciences.

How do you motivate yourself for subjects you don’t like revising?

I’m not very good at this; I tend to stick to revising English and history, geography and other subjects I don’t hate and find quite easy. I try motivate myself to revise subjects I hate like maths and science by doing revision in small chunks; I only ever revise for one hour at a time without breaks, but for super boring subjects I divide my time into half hours, or use the pomodoro method to keep me interested in revising (this works to an extent!). Also, making your revision colourful and fun helps for those subjects which are just so boring!

That’s it for today’s post! Sorry it was a little short – I’ve been really ill these past couple of days so I haven’t managed to write a wonderful blog post. If you have any more questions, make sure you leave them in the comments!
